Preparing for the arangetram.

An arangetram is a Bharatanatyam dancer's first full solo recital, the moment a student ascends the stage with the guru's blessing. At Mayura Natyalaya, advanced students work towards it through the complete margam, building the technique, stamina and abhinaya a full evening on stage demands.

The path

Years of training, one evening.

An arangetram is not a course that starts on a fixed date. It is the result of years of steady work, and the decision that a student is ready rests with the guru. Advanced training at Mayura Natyalaya focuses on:

  • The complete margam, from Alarippu to Thillana, with the Varnam as its centrepiece.
  • Stamina to hold a deep araimandi and clean lines through a full recital.
  • Abhinaya — the rasas and the poetry of padams and javalis.
  • Working with live music: the nattuvanar, vocalist, mridangam and violin or flute.
  • Stagecraft: costume, make-up, entrances, and recovering calmly from the unexpected.

Our teachers trained in the lineage of Guru Kalaimamani Smt. Charulatha Jayaraman, a Nattuvangam exponent, and bring that understanding of music and rhythm to advanced students.

Arangetram: FAQ.

Frequently asked questions

When is a student ready for an arangetram?

Readiness is decided by the guru, based on the student's technique, stamina, abhinaya and maturity across the full margam. For most students this comes after many years of steady training.

What is performed at an arangetram?

A traditional arangetram presents a full margam, usually from an invocatory piece such as Pushpanjali or Alarippu through Jathiswaram, Shabdam, Varnam, Padams and Thillana to the closing Mangalam.

Can adults do an arangetram?

Yes. Adults who train consistently and reach the required standard can present an arangetram with the guru's approval.

How long does arangetram preparation take?

Focused preparation of the full repertoire often takes around a year or more, on top of the years of training before it. Your teacher will set a realistic timeline.
